www.ideasproject.com SHEL ISRAEL Social Media Will Lose its Disruptive Quality In my view, we are coming to the end of the beginning phase of social media. It’s been a period of great disruption, but we’re leaving the disruption. We’re folding the tools of social media into our lives and our work, and then normalizing. We’re going to stop using them to talk about the tools themselves and start using them to communicate with people, to talk with people, to do our jobs. I see the day, not far into the future, when a young person fresh out of one of the best, most prestigious universities gets walked to their first windowless cubicle and they’re pointed to their desk, their chair, their computer, their telephone; they’re given an email account, they’re given the user name and password that they use in Twitter, and Facebook, and blogging. They’re told where they can check out their video cameras, and these just become the tools of which we live our lives. People are Losing the Strengths of One-to-One Intimacy Now it seems that very often, wherever we are, we’re somewhere else. There is a miracle in that but there are also some unintended consequences. We have not yet hit the point where there is anything better, or more effective, or clearer in communication than a face-to-face meeting; the gestures, the smiles, the hints, the sheer distractions, they go away.
